about

Paul H and I would work on writing sessions each Sunday morning for more than 2 years - he would arrive at my home, and with several espressos quaffed we'd sit down and brainstorm material - finding musical bits that were interesting/compelling, and then working it into the story that was the concept for the album.

On this particular Sunday, Paul was playing the progression that made up the opening 4 bars of the piece - and I started humming a melody that followed a descending arpeggio for the chords. My antennae perked up, and then I took over singing the second set of bars of the melody and Paul worked to catch up with the piano. This was the start of a really great piece of music, and at the end of the morning (about three hours of writing total) we had a completed demo of the song, including my bashed about drum track that I recorded myself. The guitar melody, the moog middle section with the modulations manually manipulated, and the ending layered keyboards with tubular bells, choirs and more.

This was the "realization" track - the character going from denial to acceptance of his issues and his fate. By the time we finished the track. it became the big production piece - we recorded the Steinberg at The Piano Studio on Capital Hill in Seattle, WA. And Paul actually took over the producer's chair for this song - he worked with Mark to ensure that the parts stayed simple to help build the strong backbone for what is the key instrument - the piano. Paul reigned in my overwhelming desire to do a David Gilmour exit solo and we turned it into a nice layered orchestral thing that fades on the bells and choirs. Zsolt recreated my bashed out drum part and added his own inimitable style to complete.

There are so many really great songs on the album, and as the writing continued each one raised the bar and the quality improved. This song leads into a raucous instrumental called Atonement - but it stands alone very well.

lyrics

Take a look into the mirror, a look into my eyes
Take a moment to consider the source of all the lies
Take a pill for anxiety, a pill for ADHD
Another pill for Enlightenment, another for ED

A calm descends, a curtain inside my head
Serenity a friend, my body numb like I were dead
For all the clingy needy the child inside is prone to do
I want to reach out and touch you, you make me feel brand new
